Rachel Ng was part of the team who set up the SGSecure movement. She recalled:

“There was an urgent need to build up the community response in times of crisis. While Community Engagement Programme was about efforts to prepare for and shore up social cohesion in times of crisis, SGSecure added onto the CEP effort to focus on equipping the community on what they can do to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“The name ‘SGSecure’ was coined at a meeting in December 2015, by Permanent Secretary (PS) Leo Yip. The team was given a task to come up with a national movement which will focus on the community’s response to terrorism. The team had to decide what it should be about.

“Working together with our Home Team colleagues, we landed on three core actions that everyone can do to fight terrorism – Stay Alert, Stay United, Stay Strong.

“Then came the naming of the movement. Many suggestions were floated. At the meeting, PS Yip asked us to give it more thought. “Maybe something like SGSecure,” he said.

We could not better him. We could not better that term, and we were in resounding agreement. It took the SG brand and it encompassed the key outcome of the movement – to secure our way of life in Singapore. It made sense. The rest was history.”
